Investigators look into falling of children from windows in several regions

This spring incidents become more frequent in some regions of Russia when small children are injured or killed after falling from windows. The investigators of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have organized pre-investigating checks into the incidents.

In May 2014 alone in the Vladimir Region there were registered 7 such incidents when children aged between 2 and 6 fell from apartment windows and were rushed to resuscitation departments of local hospitals with serious injuries.

On 20 and 21 May 2014, there were 3 such incidents in different blocks of the city of Saint-Petersburg.

On May 10, 2014, in a village in Sakmara District in Orenburg Region the ambulance delivered to district hospital a year-old girl with injuries to her head, chest and stomach after falling from a second storey apartment window.

The analysis shows that usually in all cases children climbed windowsills using different nearby pieces of furniture as a prop (chairs, armchairs, stands), leaned on the mosquito net and fell out with it. The majority of the incidents are explained by some common factors: absence of adults nearby; absent-mindedness of families, who forget to close the windows before going out; incorrect layout of furniture enabling the children to use it as help to climb windowsills; presence of mosquito nets making an illusion that a window is closed.

The Investigative Committee draws attention and warns about necessity of more responsible attitude of parents and other adults towards providing security of children in apartments. Do not leave a small child unattended by adults, any situation that might lead to a tragedy must be excluded.
