In Saint-Petersburg members of extremist group found guilty of nationally motivated crimes

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by Saint-Petersburg Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee sufficient to convict members of a criminal group Vladimir and Valentin Mumzhiyev, Artyom Zavyalov, Yevgeny Koryabkin, German Vengelveld, Dmitry Abalishin, Roman Veits, Kirill Prisyazhnyuk and Arseny Miroshnichenko. Depending on the role of each one they were found guilty of crimes under paragraphs “a” and “g” of part 2 of article 105 of the RF Penal Code (murder), paragraph “a” of part 2 of article 282 (incitement of hatred or enmity), part 3 of article 33, paragraphs “g” and “i” of part 2 of article 105 (attempted murder), part 2 of article 213 (hooliganism), article 223 and article 222 (illegal circulation of arms, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices).

The court and investigators have found that in 2009, Georgy Temofeyev, a resident of Saint-Petersburg, convicted of the said crimes in 2012 set up a criminal group to prepare and commit extremism crimes. The group’s activity was aimed at inciting racial and national hatred and enmity towards nationals of the North Caucasus, Asia, Africa. They also acted guided by principles of intolerance towards asocial persons.

Besides Timofeyev, the group included 11 young people aged between 17 and 24. According to investigators they committed crimes in Saint-Petersburg between 2009 and 2010. Over that period they committed dozens of serious and especially serious crimes, including 10 murders, 5 attempted murders, blasting of bus stop at the crossroads of Zanevsky prospekt and Shaumyan prospekt, arson to the Temple of Kazan Virgin. In addition, they spread out extremism booklets.

The characteristic features of the group were clear planning, multiple repetition of acts of extremism, stable composition of the group, common mental aspirations shared by all the members, as well as identical way of crimes. The investigators found that the leader ordered the members of the group to make videos of their crimes to make them public later.

This way, on the eve of the 2010 New Year, a shocking video of murdering citizens of Ghana Gvajo Avenga was posted on the Internet. The action was commented by a man wearing a balaclava with a swastika in the background. It was thanks to this video the investigators managed quickly detain the two leaders of the group and later all the rest of its members.

Earlier Dmitry Nedugov, a member of the said group, who had concluded a pre-trial cooperation deal, was convicted, and another accomplice is wanted.

During the probe, the investigator and his family were repeatedly threatened with murder, therefore measures were taken to provide security of the investigator and his family.

The investigators carefully gathered the evidence for the case, which consisted of 90 volumes. During the probe over 150 forensic examinations were run and over 100 witnesses were questioned.

The court has sentenced German Vengerveld to 24 years in prison, Vladimir Mumzhiyev – to 16 years, Valentin Mumzhiyev and Artyov Zavyalov – to 14 years, Yevgeny Koryabkin and Dmitry Abalishin – to 7 years, Roman Veits got a 2-year suspended sentence, Kirill Prisyzzhnyuk – to 3 years and Arseny Miroshnichenko – to 9 years.
