In Sverdlovsk Region investigation launched into death of elderly married couple and two minor children after fire at multi-apartment building

On the evening of July 27, 2014, it was reported to the Yekaterinburg Police that a 66-year-old woman and her two grandchildren aged 2 to 4 died of poisoning by combustion products after a fire in one of the apartments of a residential building on Patris Lumumba Street. Another victim, a man born in 1948, the spouse of the deceased woman, was hospitalized at toxicology department. Despite the efforts taken by physicians he also died on July 29.

The Sverdlovsk Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a criminal investigation for an offense under part 3 of article 109 (negligent infliction of death to two or more persons) in order to establish all the circumstances of the incident.

Currently, investigators are working to establish all the circumstances of the tragedy. A forensic examination has been scheduled and is now underway to determine the exact cause of death of the elderly couple and two children. A request to submit the fire report to investigators will be referred to the State Fire Safety Inspectorate in the near future in order to establish the source and the exact causes of the fire. Investigators have developed several theories about what had happened, including careless handling of fire. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
