In Chelyabinsk Region three employees of South Ural Railway charged in freight train crash case

The Ural Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have brought charges against a roadmaster, a foreman and a mechanic of Zlatoust section of the South Ural railways– a branch office of OAO Russian Railways. They are charged with a crime under part 1 of article 263 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of safety rules for traffic and operation of railway transport entailing large damage by negligence). 

According to the investigators, on 12 February 2014, a freight train crashed derailing 30 cars loaded with coal in the Chelyabinsk Region on the 1,969th km of the railroad between Urzhumka and Khrebet stations. The derailment was due to the fact that the Zlatoust section’s workers violated track maintenance requirements under regulations and tolerance as well as the requirements on early recognition of snow mounting between rail base and baseplates. The crash caused OAO Russian Railways, owners of the cargo and the rolling stock damage of 43 million rubles.

At the moment investigative operations are underway to consolidate the evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
