In Moscow Region criminal investigation opened in murder of police officer while hunting in Orekhovo-Zuyevo

On 26 September 2014, the Moscow Region Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee got a report that an officer of Rys special forces unit of the Russian Ministry of Interior had gone for hunting in Orekhovo-Zuyevo and disappeared.

In the period between 26 and 30 September 2014, employees of the Russian Ministry of Interior and volunteers carried out search operations involving divers and helicopters. At the same time investigators ran a pre-investigating check: examined the incident scene and found substances of brown color in a car of one of the victim’s friends. The man surrendered and confessed that he killed the police officer while hunting when he had confused him with a beaver at night.

The investigating bodies of the Moscow Region Main Investigations Directorate launched a criminal investigation into a crime under part 1 of article 105 of the RF Penal Code (murder).

According to preliminary reports, on 24 September 2014, around 4 PM, the victim arrived to go hunting in the woods not far from the village of Novonikolayevka in Orekhovo-Zuyevo District with his 6 friends. Late at night the men went home, but the victim and one of his friends stayed for night hunting for beavers. The latter shot at the victim, possibly, confused him with a beaver in the dark.

By now the dead body of the police officer has been found in a swamp with a gunshot wound to his head. A number of tests are about to be run. The investigation is ongoing.
