Heavy hauler driver charged with traffic accident killing seven including two minors detained in Nizhny Novgorod Region

Nizhny Novgorod Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have pressed charges of a crime under part 5 of article 264 of the RF Penal Code (violation of highway regulations by a driver entailing death of two or more people by negligence) against a 24-year-old resident of the Republic of Dagestan.

According to investigators, on 5 November 2014, at 12:30 PM, the truck driver was moving from Nizhny Novgorod on Kasimov-Ryazhsk highway and on a sharp bend drove out to the wrong side of the road and collided with a PAZ bus moving in the opposite direction. The truck’s trailer hit the bus causing the straps of the trailer holding wooden beams to break and the sides of the trailer to open. One of the beams fell on the bus. According to the latest data 22 people were injured in the accident, 7 of them died, including two minors: a 7-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, those with the most serious injuries were delivered to the hospital of the regional center. The number of the victims is being specified.

The accused did not plead guilty, but testified on the circumstances of the traffic accident.

The truck driver has been driving for 6 years, lives in Dagestan. He had driven his truck to Vyksa District, loaded the truck with 43 cubic meters of wooden beams and set off back. The load was meant for a company located in a village in Dagestan. At the moment of the accident the driver was sober and all his documents were in line with current laws.

A number of forensic medical, criminalistic and technical inquiries will be conducted during the investigation. Investigators have filed a request to place the accused in custody pending trial. The investigation is ongoing.
