In Lipetsk Region sentence passed in case over murder of Great Patriotic War veteran

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by Lipetsk Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee sufficient to convict Vasily Ivanov, 56. He was found guilty of crimes under part 2 of article 139 of the RF Penal Code (burglary using force), part 1 of article 105 (murder) and part 1 of article 158 (robbery).

The court and investigators found that in the evening of 5 July 2014, Ivanov being heavily drunk came up to the house of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War and knocked the door of the terrace. The 87-year-old owner of the house came out. When the veteran opened the door, the accused threw a handful of salt into his eyes and then punched him in face. The veteran fell down and knocked his head on the floor. After that the accused strangled the helpless old man with a loop he had brought in. The veteran died on the spot. Ivanov took from the veteran’s house property worth little more than 2 thousand rubles and fled.

During the investigation it was found that Ivanov had had previous police records including those for burglaries.

Under pressure of the evidence the man confessed to the crime and explained to investigator that had committed the crime because of longstanding conflict he had with the veteran, who had accused him of stealing a large sum of money two years ago. He was summoned to police several times due to that issue and was very exasperated and displeased by that. And all that time he had wanted to get revenge on his distant relative.

The court sentenced Ivanov to 9 years 10 months to be served in a maximum security penal colony.
