Chairman of Saratov Region Capital Construction Committee found guilty of bribery on large scale

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by Saratov Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee sufficient to convict Chairman of Saratov Region Capital Construction Committee Alexander Surkov. He was found guilty of a crime under part 6 of article 290 of the RF Penal Code (bribery on a very large scale).

The court and investigators revealed that in December 2007, the Saratov Region Capital Construction Committee and a commercial company signed a state contract on construction and refurbishment of coast-protecting structures of Volgograd reservoir within the embankment of the city of Saratov. In August 2013, Surkov acting out of mercenary motives during meetings with representatives of the company demanded 10 million rubles as a bribe for transferring the pay under the state contract and additional agreements to it. On 2 September 2013, Surkov was detained in his own office while receiving part of the bribe of 7 million rubles. The money was confiscated by the investigators.

The court sentenced Surkov to 10 years to be served in a maximum-security penal colony and a fine of 500 million rubles. He was also banned from taking certain positions for 3 years.
