In Rostov-on-Don hearings start in case against Ali Taziyev charged with attempts on lives of law enforcement officers and other crimes

Today the North Caucasian Circuit Military Court has started first hearings in the case against Ali Taziyev. He is charged with crimes under part 2 of article 209 of the RF penal Code (membership in a stable armed group (gang) and taking part in crimes it has committed), part 3 of article 205 (a terrorist attack entailing deliberate infliction of death), article 317 (an attempt on the lives of law-enforcement officials and military men), part 3 of article 30, paragraphs “a”, “f”, “g” and “h” of part 2  of article 105 (attempted murder and murder of two or more people by a generally dangerous way, by an organized group, aggravated by banditry), paragraphs “a” and “b” of part 4 of article 226 (stealing of firearms, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices, committed by an organized group, using violence dangerous for life and health), 3 counts of a crime under part 4 of article 166 (car thefts committed by an organized group, using violence dangerous for life and health), part 3 of article 222 (illegal circulation of firearms, ammunition committed by an organized group).

According to investigators, in early 2004, Taziyev joined a gang led by Shamil Basayev. Who planned a massive terrorist attack in Ingushetia to tear away Chechnya, Ingushetia and other federal subjects of Ciscaucasia and establish there the Islamic State. In all, Basayev had over 300 insurgents at his disposal. Taziyev was charged with leadership of one of criminal groups numbering to at least 25 insurgents.

The attack was planned to take place at 10:30 PM, on 21 June 2004. Basayev gave an order to kill all soldiers, law-enforcement officials and citizens that were with them, to take their guns and ammunition for the gang, to take their cars, to set fire to buildings of police departments, Nazran border service team of the North Caucasian Regional Office of the Federal Border Service with all material valuables and documents inside, and to release members of the gang, who had been arrested.

In addition, they planned to attack different units of the Ministry of the Interior in Ingushetia and a military unit there.

The Taziyev’s squad was charged to attack traffic police officers at the Volga-16 checkpoint, kill them and after that to pose as officials of a security agency and control the section of the road so that the insurgents could move freely and to kill all law enforcement officials and military moving along the road.

As a result of actions of Basayev’s gang, including Taziyev, 78 people were killed, including law enforcement officials and military, 113 were wounded. Organizations, enterprises and citizens suffered considerable pecuniary damage.

Taziyev was put on a search in 2004 and was detained in March 2013 during a special operation in Ingushetia.

The investigators have gathered enough evidence so the case with the approved indictment has been sent to court to be tried on the merits.

Earlier Taziyev was sentenced to life in prison for taking leadership in an armed unit, not defined by federal laws; illegal carrying of firearms and ammunitions, committed by an organized group; explosion of a coach Ikarus-256 at a terminal in the town of Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Territory in 2007; attempts on the life of President of Ingushetia Yevkurov in 2009; organization of explosion in Nazran police department and Nazran District police department in 2009.
