In Orenburg Region, probe launched in An-2 crash killing three

The Ural Transport Investigation Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in a crime under Part 3 of Article 263 of the RF Penal Code (Violation of the rules for traffic safety and operation of the air transportation systems involving by negligence death of two or more persons).

According to the investigation, on 6 February 2016, at 12:45 PM, local time, an Antonov-2 owned by ZAO AK Light Air was flying over an oil pipeline system when it crashed in the village Saverovka, Gai District, Orenburg Region. There were three people aboard: the pilot, the second pilot and an employee of a company involved in oil transportation. All three died of injuries on the scene. The plane was destroyed.

At present, an investigative team consisting of officials, investigators and criminalists of the Ural Transport Investigation Directorate, police officers and a forensic medical expert have examined the scene, the plane, the surrounding area and the bodies. Samples of fuel and flight documents were confiscated from the scene to be processed for evidence. In addition, documents of title to the Antonov-2 and documents related to the operation of the plane, samples of fuel and oil at the airfield put into the Antonov-2 before the flight as well as technical maintenance documents were confiscated. The runway near the settlement of Preobrazhenovka, Sterlitamak District, Bashkortostan has been examined. A mechanic, who ran the last technical maintenance on the plane, has been questioned about the details of the procedure.

The investigation is ongoing.
