In Transbaikalian Territory, DNA test solves rape committed in 2015

The Transbaikalian Territory Office of the Investigative Committee has pressed charges against a 30-year-old resident of the city of Ulan-Ude. The man is charged with crimes under part 1 of Article 131 (rape) and Part 1 of Article 132 of the RF Penal Code (sexual abuse).

According to investigators, at night in September 2015, the accused assaulted a woman in Central District of the town of Chita. He raped her and sexually abused, and then took off.

A lot of investigative and other procedural operations were carried out to find the perpetrator. The results of the investigation were regularly discussed at interagency meetings together with police officers.

The woman was able to describe the man and investigators made an identikit. The crime scene was swept for evidence, while the investigators looked for witnesses via mass media among other means.

A year after the crime this well-planned and minute work gave the result when the investigators revealed that a man from Buryatia who had left abroad for work more than 6 months ago might have been involved in the crime. The evidence against him was a DNA test, the sample for which the investigators had taken from the man’s close relative. The man was put on a global wanted list and detained while he was trying to cross the border.

A court has ruled to put the man in custody pending trial. He was questioned and pleaded guilty.

At present investigative operations are underway to find out all the details of the crime.
