In Chechen Republic, members of gang who attacked military in 1999 jailed

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the North Caucasus Federal District Directorate of the Investigative Committee as sufficient to convict Shamil Kazbulatov and Tenali Kanayev. They were found guilty of an attempt on military servants under Article 317 of the RF Penal Code.

The court and investigators have revealed that Kazbulatov and Kanayev in early 1999 joined Nogaisky Dzhamaat gang, an affiliate of a community headed by Shamil Basayev and Khattab, which on 4 October 1999, attacked military men of the Russian Defense Ministry’s military unit located near the settlement of Chervlyonnaya, Shelkovskaya District, Chechen Republic. 15 military men were killed and 28 more injured in the attack.

The court has sentenced Kazbulatov to 15 years and Kanayev to 8.5 years in a maximum-security correctional facility.

There are ongoing investigative and search operations to identify all the members of the gang.
