Statement of Investigative Committee

The Magadan Region Office of the Investigative Committee continues investigating negligence of officials of guardianship authorities who let a family adopt a child, who later was taken to hospital with cachexia and the attempted murder of the child.

Investigating crimes committed against children is a priority for the Investigative Committee. Investigators are going to give all-round and impartial legal assessment to the actions of certain officials of the guardianship authorities when they made a decision to let the family adopt the boy, and to their check of the boy’s living conditions in the foster family.

The Investigative Committee implements state policy in the area of criminal proceedings as a federal state authority. Committee’s investigators are procedurally independent and report to their superiors only. The said criminal cases are being supervised by the Investigative Committee’s Central Office. The regional authorities including the governor of the region have no authority to intervene in the investigation in any way or take it under control. Making his public statement, the governor apparently did not bear in mind the current laws regarding distribution of powers.
