Probe launched against former deputy director of Federal Penitentiary Service in St. Petersburg

The Saint Petersburg Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation against former deputy director of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service Nikolai Barinov suspected of bribery under part 4, item “c” of Article 290 of the RF Criminal Code.

According to investigators, while service as the deputy director of the Federal Penitentiary Service the suspect supervised work at the construction site of a 4,000-capacity pre-trial detention center in Saint Petersburg located in Kolpino District. While in Saint Petersburg, from May to August 2007, the suspect informed CEO of two construction companies involved in the construction that for a reward of at least 12% of each transfer the companies get as a payment for their work, he would ensure that necessary acceptance documents would be signed. Then, from October 2007 to December 2012, in different places in Saint Petersburg and in Moscow, he several times received bribes which totaled to at least 110 million rubles.

The suspect was exposed and detained during investigative operations carried out in conjunction with officers of the Federal Security Service and its office in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Region.

The suspect is now expecting custodial restraint and charges.
