Probe launched in Smolensk Region following media reports about death of man in hospital

The Smolensk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in negligence entailing death of a person under Part 2 of Article 293 and endangerment under Article 125 of the RF Criminal Code following media reports on medical malpractice at Emergency Aid Hospital.

Yesterday, mass media published information, that a man died at the Emergency Aid Hospital in June 2017, due to failure to provide medical aid. There is also a footage from a hospital’s CCTV camera showing the man walk out of a ward and collapse. He tried to get up several times, but fell on the floor over and over. The mass media say that the medical personnel were not paying any attention to the victim.

Investigators are now working to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify persons guilty of negligence.

At the same time, considering that the regional investigative authority has already run a check into the crime earlier, but refused to open an investigation, Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin has ordered the Central Office to control procedural decisions made over the case.
