Criminal case initiated in Dagestan over terrorist attack leaving 12 people dead and over 100 injured

On 3 May 2012, at 10:10 p.m. an unknown person set off an explosive device, presumably set in the VAZ car, near traffic police field post Alyaska-30 on the outskirts of Makhachkala on the highway Makhachkala-Astrakhan. Blast damaged nearby buildings and cars. The second homemade bomb, set presumably in Gazel car, detonated at about 10:25 when people had gathered to watch and the police, and emergency responders of Dagestan EMERCOM service had arrived at the scene. The second blast claimed 12 lives, including 7 Interior Ministry policemen, 3 rescuers of local EMERCOM service and 2 local people. Over 100 injured were rushed to hospitals. Nearby buildings and more than 30 cars were seriously damaged.

Investigative bodies of the RF Investigative Committee for the Republic of Dagestan have initiated a criminal case over the twin blasts, the crime under several articles of the Russian Criminal Code, including paragraph “b” of part 3 of article 205 (terrorism), part 2 of article 222 (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation, or bearing of firearms, its basic parts, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices), and part 3 of article 223 (illegal manufacture of weapons).

The blast power of the first device in VAZ car equaled to 50kl TNT. The power of the second one is being verified.

Experienced investigators and criminologists of the Central Investigative Department of SK for North-Caucasus federal district are sent to assist the investigation.

At present investigative actions are underway to establish all circumstances of the crime and persons involved in it. The investigation is to be continued.
