Progress of criminal investigation into crash of helicopter Mi-8T in the Krasnoyarsk Territory

West Siberian Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continues investigating a criminal case over a crash of a helicopter Mi-8T at Yurubchensky deposit in the Krasnoyarsk Territory initiated over signs of a crime under part 2 of article 263 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of safety rules for traffic and operation of air transport entailing by negligence death of a person).

We remind, on 17 October 2012, at about 12:00 local time, Mi-8T owned by KrasAvia airlines with 4 crew members and 8 passengers, travelling Boguchany- Yurubchen 5, fell on a right side during landing. One passenger died.

As a result of primary investigating operations, interrogation of victims and witnesses, decoding by Interstate Aviation Commission specialists data on airborne recorders (blackboxes) investigators have established the picture of the accident. During landing the helicopter took a slight starboard list, which after touching a landing site led to its sliding. This caused the right wheel of the main undercarriage go outside the landing site and sink into soil and made the list even sharper. The helicopter started to rotate around its axis and collided with earth outside the landing site.

According to investigators the weather conditions at the landing site were normal. The helicopter was subject to pre-flight preparations and its crew all necessary procedures to be allowed flying. The quality of fuel met the requirements.

At present a number of relevant expert examinations are under way to establish the cause of the crash. The investigators still consider as working versions the pilots’ error and a malfunction of a helicopter. Investigation is to be continued.
