Three arrested on suspicions of terrorist attack in Dagestan killing 7 people, including Sheikh Said Afandi

The Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee in the process of investigating a criminal case over the terrorist attack in Dagestan killing 7 people including a prominent religious figure Shaikh Said Afandi, has apprehended Magomed Gadzhiyev, Shikhmirza Labazanov and Magomedali Amirkhanov. Under the petition of the investigators they were placed into custody as pretrial restraining measure.

According to investigators, the radical Muslims organized a criminal group in Untsukul district of the Republic of Dagestan. The group was included in the so called “Dagestani front” of the Imarat kavkaz terrorist organization. The group included Gadzhiyev, Labazanov, Amirkhanov, Aminat Saprykina (Kurbanova) and others.

In August 2012, members of this group decided to carry out a terrorist attack in a place of mass religious events. As the object of the crime they chose the place of mass pilgrimage – house of cleric Shaikh Said Afandi. On 28 August 2012, Saprykina disguised as a pilgrim came into the said house in the village of Chirkey, Buynaksk district and set off a hand-made explosive device. According to investigators, Gadzhiyev, Labazanov and Amirkhanov had provided purchase of the bomb, living of Saprykina before the crime and controlled her on her way to the place of the attack.

On instructions of the Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee the Federal Security Service has carried out a special operation in mountain villages of Dagestan, as a result of which Gadzhiyev, Labazanov and Amirkhanov were detained. In the near future they will be charged with crimes under paragraph “b” of part 3 of article 205 (an act of terrorism), part 1 of article 222 (illegal handling of firearms and explosives) and part 1 of article 223 of the RF Criminal Code (illegal manufacture of arms). The search for other members of the group is carried on.
