In Moscow former head of Russian Federal Drug Control Service department detained on suspicion of drug trafficking

The Investigation Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Central Federal District investigating a criminal case on charges of illegal sales of a drug mixture containing diacetylmorphine (heroin) with a total weight of 20 kg by unidentified officials of Russia Federal Drug Control in 2010-2011.

According to investigators, in 2010-2011, Grant Akopyan, as chief of the Directorate for combatting drug-related crime of the Investigative Department of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service carried out the sale of narcotics to citizens of neighboring countries, which were found through the offices of convicts serving their sentences in correctional facilities. To give the impression of his effectiveness, after the drugs were handed over to foreigners who agreed to transport them, Akopyan detained them.

Currently investigators are conducting searches at Akopyan’s places of residence, looking for the the source of the drugs sold by Akopyan, and checking his involvement in the commission of other similar crimes in the territory of the Russian Federation. Currently Akopyan is detained, investigators are deciding on bringing charges against him for an offense under Paragraphs "a, b, g" of Part 3 of Article 228.1 of the Criminal Code (illegal making, sale or transportation of narcotic drugs) and selecting a measure of restraint. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
