In Krasnoyarsk Territory bus driver whose passengers got scalded to stand trial

The investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee for the Krasnoyarsk Territory have finished investigating a criminal case against a bus driver charged with a crime under part 1 of article 264 of the RF Penal Code (violation of transport traffic and operation rules).

The investigators have found that, in the afternoon of 22 May 2014, the accused was driving a PAZ bus in Academician Vavilov Street in the city of Krasnoyarsk. The street was covered with vapor from a fountain of hot water coming from a ruptured water main, so the driver could see almost nothing ahead of him. According to paragraph 10.1 of traffic code, if there is a danger for the traffic, which a driver is able to see, they have to take all possible measures to slow down and even stop the vehicle. However, the bus driver went on and ran over the rupture. The engine failed when hot water hit it and started to get into the bus. The passers-by opened the back door of the bus and helped the passengers to get out.

As a result of the incident 14 passengers got minor and medium scalds, and one woman suffered grievous bodily harm. The driver also sustained minor scads.

The investigators have gathered enough evidence, so the criminal case with the approved indictment has been sent to court to be tried on the merits.
