The Saratov Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have opened a criminal investigation in the murder of an 18-month-old baby (paragraph “c”, part 2 of article 105 of the RF Penal Code).

It was reported earlier that in the morning of 5 January 2016, it was reported that the mother had found her dead baby in a single-family house in the town of Rtishchevo. According to forensic medical examination the baby died of mechanical asphyxia when its mouth and hose were covered by a soft object.

According to investigators, on 2 January 2016, in the evening, the 31-year-old local woman was drunk and alone with her baby in the house in Balashovskaya street in Rtishchevo. The baby had been crying for a long time and the woman put it on a pillow facedown and held in such position for several minutes until the baby stopped crying. In the morning of 3 January 2016, the woman saw that the baby had no signs of life and reported it to the police only two days later.

At present, the suspect is in custody and has confessed to the crime. Custodial restraint is expected. The investigation is ongoing.
