In Yekaterinburg, probe launched into death of girl kept in children’s home for mental deficient

In the morning of 11 January 2016, the police of Yekaterinburg got a report that the dead body of an 8-year-old girl had been found in the bath unit of the children’s home for mental deficient. According to preliminary information, the girl had drowned. The Sverdlovsk Region investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have opened a criminal investigation in a crime under part 2 of article 109 of the RF Penal Code (reckless homicide resulted from improper discharge of professional duty).

According to investigators, in the morning of 11 January, the girl together with other children, who could not take care of themselves, was brought into the bath unit. An employee of the facility put the girl in the bath and got distracted by another child. In a short time, when she came back to the girl, she found her lying in the bath dead.

At present, the investigators of the territorial investigations department, criminalists of the regional investigations directorate in cooperation with the police are carrying out a set of operations necessary to find out all the details of the incident. A number of forensic examinations, including a medical one, are going to be run during the investigation in order to find out the exact cause of death. At present, the investigators are requesting necessary documents related to the health of the girl and duties of the staff. The investigation is ongoing.
