In Sakhalin Region criminal case opened over derailment of train killing one and injuring 11 people

The investigating bodies of the Far Eastern Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a criminal investigation into a crime under part 2 of article 263 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of safety standards for traffic and operation of railway transport entailing death of a person by negligence) after a passenger train derailed in Sakhalin Region killing one person and injuring eleven more.

According to investigators, on 3 November 2014, at 06:35 PM, local time, two-car commuter passenger train № 6109 jumped off the track on the second piquet of 102nd km of the span Chekhov – Sakhalinsky – Pionery – Sakhalinsky near the village of Kostromskoye in the direction of Kholmsk station - Tomari station of Sakhalin region of the Far Eastern railway. A roadmaster of Kholmsk distance born in 1987 was killed in the accident. In addition, 11 people including a girl born in 2002 were taken to nearby hospitals with head injuries and bruises. 

The investigators believe that the cause of the accident could be poor condition of the railway, which is evident from the washed out part of the railroad about 150 meters long.

At present additional examination of the scene is in progress, witnesses are being questioned and other investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
